On behalf of all of us here at the IBEW Utility Labor Council of New York State we would like to wish you all a very safe and happy Labor Day. As an organization, we have much to be thankful for. The Utility Workers Assault Bill was signed into law by Governor Cuomo. Many thanks to the Governor as well as all the lawmakers that supported our workforce through the legislative process. Thousands of hardworking utility workers now have an added sense of security knowing that doing harm to them while performing their duties will not be tolerated. Also the Fitzpatrick Power Plant in Oswego is in the process of being purchased, which will save over 600 jobs and essentially save an entire community. The state was fundamental in keeping the plant open by granting zero emissions credits to subsidize the project. We also launched our new mobile friendly website at utlitylaborcouncil.com and Veterans Buyback Legislation will affect many of our NYPA members who served in the military. With Labor Day weekend here, it is time to take some much needed time off and reflect on the accomplishments and workplace rights that the union movement has provided to working people all across this great nation. There is still much work to be done, such as raising livable wages, passing paid family leave, keeping working people at the table with global trade deals and ensuring that renewable energy jobs become good jobs as we tackle climate change. We all have much to be thankful for and this Labor Day weekend we pay homage to those workers before us who fought and died for the basic rights we all take for granted. Once the fireworks, parades and barbecues are over, we have to roll up the sleeves and get back to work to continue our never-ending fight of ensuring that all working people have access to good, safe jobs. Happy Labor Day.
