Happy Holidays from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Utility Labor Council of NYS. 2016 has been a busy year for the Council. After years of lobbying, we were able to secure the successful passage of the Utility Worker Assault Bill. This bill would increase the penalties for assaulting a Utility Worker. As you will read below, the new law has already used to protect a worker in Buffalo. Thanks to the hard work of IBEW locals across the state, the New York Public Service Commission passed a Clean Energy Standard that included a subsidy for nuclear power. This standard makes New York a leader in reducing the states carbon emissions while supporting an energy policy that takes into account all forms of renewable energy. Thanks to these new subsidies, 600 jobs were saved at Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant. I would like to take the opportunity to recognize Don Daley of Local 1049 on Long Island who will be retiring this coming February. Don has earned the respect of this Council through his involvement, work ethic and forward thinking ideas. I had the opportunity to visit Don at Local 1049 during the height of super storm sandy and must say I was impressed with his leadership and his staffs commitment during very trying times. Please join me in wishing Don and his family a very happy retirement as he enjoys the fruits of his labor at the conclusion of his lifelong commitment to working people and the IBEW. He will truly be missed. Once again, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays and we look forward to a productive, progressive and prosperous 2017.
